Our History

The history of Massapequa Funeral Home dates back to 1945. Almost 75 years ago, Albert Michalek opened the first location at 99 New York Avenue, what is now the Marine Corp. League. Albert died in 1964 and his son-in-law Allen Nicholson took over the family business. Allen built a new facility at 1050 Park Blvd. in Massapequa Park and had the grand opening in 1971.

In 1990, Allen died suddenly, and his son, Travis, who had been a funeral director under his father for seven years, assumed responsibilities. Travis loved serving families and saw the members of families choosing to be served by this firm double in one year. So in 1996, Travis purchased the vacant land located on the SE corner of Whitewood Drive and Merrick Road and began building Massapequa’s second location. Travis wanted to give the community another beautiful location with all the original charm and even more personalized service. Massapequa had supported his family and it was time to give back. And, give back he did with a New England style, two story breath-taking building. Travis said “Everyone wanted it to be improved and yet still feel at home.” It officially opened quietly on September 11, 2001, as the country mourned in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

As Massapequa’s oldest business, we believe it is our responsibility and privilege to serve the community with quality and respect.
