STEGMEIER – Dr. Erich J. Feb 9, 1934 – June 8, 2018. Massapequa, NY (formerly of New Fairfield, CT, and Elmont, NY). For 59 years the cherished husband of Helen. Doting father of Andrea Stegmeier-Ulinski of Merrick (husband Mark), and Laura Stegmeier-Pettinato of Massapequa. An inspirational grandfather to his devoted grandchildren Logan Pettinato (Portland, ME) and Hayley Pettinato (Massapequa). Brother-in-law of Jean DeGaetan (Massapequa). A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School and Veteran of the United States Army, he earned his BA and Master of Science degrees as well as a Professional Diploma in Administration and Supervision from Queens College, and was awarded an Ed.D in Education from St. John’s University. An admitted computer enthusiast, he later completed a Computer Science sequence at Queens College. He met his wife, Helen, when both taught at P.S. 125 in Brownsville. Over the first 14 years of his career in education, he served in various teaching and administrative positions in the NYC Schools System and schools in Brooklyn and Queens. Dr. Stegmeier joined the Island Park School district in 1970 as principal of the Francis X. Hegarty School. Following a nine-year tenure as Hegarty’s principal, he was assigned as assistant superintendent of schools and served long-term in that position from 1979-1994. In 1994, he was unanimously endorsed by the board of education for promotion to superintendent of schools, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. A past president of the Nassau Association of District Curriculum Officials (NADCO), he also served as president of the St. John’s University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa and as a Key Club advisor for the Elmont Kiwanis Club. A devoted husband, father, and family man, he spent his retirement years with his loving family and pursued his passions of boating, fishing, and spending time in nature. The family wishes to extend deepest gratitude to the entire staff at Sunrise Assisted Living in Plainview. Family will receive friends Wednesday, June 13, 2-4:00 pm and 7-9:00 pm, at the Massapequa Funeral Home, 1050 Park Blvd, Massapequa Park, NY 11762. Private cremation.
