Bobby died almost 11 months ago; I learned of his passing just now. I met Bobby in the Spring of 1973 when I was a student at the NYU film school and I was casting the lead for my student film. The part was a tough, 15 year old street kid and all the trained actors I met were way too soft. I met Bobby at a Police Athletic League basketball practice at St. Patricks on Mulberry Street. Although we were from different worlds, we hit it off immediately. He brought on two friends, Joey Cruz and Brian Zonin to act along with him. Before filming I had to teach these three kids how to act. We rehearsed four hours a day, five days a week for four weeks before filming. It was during these rehearsals that Bobby and I bonded. I remember he introduced me as his older brother to a girl he was interested in. I was touched. Bobby and I couldn't have looked less like brothers but we had become so close that we thought of each other as brothers. I ran out of money in the middle of the production and we had to take a seven month break in filming, but Bobby (and Joey and Brian) were there for me when I raised the money to finish filming. He was as loyal a friend as I have ever had. Bobby's standout performance made the film work."Swag" would go on to win the Student Academy Award for Best Dramatic Film in 1975 and a slew of other awards. I'll never forget when "Swag" played at the NYU Film Festival before a large audience. Bobby, his friends and family filled the first two rows of the theater and reveled in his well desrved moment. We lost touch but reconnected in 2008. It was like not a moment had passed. I'll miss Bobby very much. He was a great guy.
